Last week’s article (read it here) led us through the Gitcoin Grants Program, delving into how to participate as a donor and highlighting the #GG18 grantee ELI5 DAO. As we step into the concluding week of the round, we’ve committed ourselves to sifting through the four core rounds, unearthing captivating, commendable, and possibly paradigm-shifting grantees. Presented below is a compilation of new-to-us projects that have captured our attention.
Web3 Open Source Software
Web3 OSS grants are open-source projects primarily focused on developing and/or advancing the Web3 industry.
Community-bound Tokens: Community-bound Tokens (CBTs) are modified ERC-20 tokens that can only be transferred among members of a community, which can be used for reputation, community merit based governance, opt-in social credit score, coordination games or engagement scores.
StaTwig Supply Chain Visibility for Life Saving Vaccines and Food: StaTwig delivers supply chain visibility for critical supply chains such as vaccines and food. At the heart of our mission is VaccineLedger, an audacious decentralized supply chain management platform that meticulously traces vaccines, from their manufacturing origins to the very last beneficiary.
PEERUP: PEERUP is a community launchpad, specifically designed for associations, co-ops, or sports clubs with a joint treasury. Our mobile-first super app leverages blockchain technology to provide transparent and secure governance and fund management, offering a seamless community creation experience, much like creating a group chat on WhatsApp.
viaPrize: viaPrize.org is the only platform in the world that allows anyone to create a crowdfunded prize (AKA “bounty”) to incentivize the creation of public goods. This innovative solution overcomes the tragedy of the commons through peer-to-peer collaboration rather than bureaucracy.
WTF Academy: WTF Academy is a web3 open-source university for devs. Our goal is to onboard 100,000 devs to web3. We have produced open-source tutorials, quizzes, and on-chain certificates for devs. We have received grants from Ethereum Foundation ESP, StarkWare, and Optimism. We have 7,000+ members and 200+ contributors across the world.
Web3 Community and Education
Web3 Community and Education grants focus on non-software related projects that are helping to push the Web3 space forward.
Crypto Altruism: This project will help onboard the next generation of Changemakers and Nonprofits to Web3. Funding from the Gitcoin Beta Round will support the ongoing development of a Web3 Changemaker Toolkit and help us build our capacity to support Nonprofits, grassroots movements, and activists interested in using the power of Web3 to change the world.
Crypto Sapiens: Crypto Sapiens is a web3 media platform. We feature the voices of web3 founders and community builders. Our mission is to help the world evolve from crypto curious to crypto native. We do so by navigating the cryptoverse and creating valuable, accessible content across our network including podcasts, newsletters, and live events. We have grown our audience to over 100,000 listeners and readers worldwide.
Man of Crypto: Man of Crypto is a unique concept that injects fresh air into the web3 space and opens up web3 to the world. The project involves traveling worldwide, engaging with local web3 communities, showcasing the latest web3 innovations, and uncovering the true state of crypto adoption in each region. Women Biz Academy: We are Women Biz, a peruvian community who empower women through web3. We are focusing on onboarding, education and networking in the web3 ecosystem.
Climate Solutions
Grants in this round are primarily focused on climate solutions. The projects are explicitly helping to reduce GHGs, and/or serve as an important core infrastructure for web3 climate solutions.
MesoReefDAO: Mesoamerican Reef DAO (MesoReefDAO) is a Regenerative Coral Reef Science initiative that focuses on the creation of a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) of DeSci (Decentralized Science) that seeks to scale coral reef conservation efforts in the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR).
Ocean Sole: We turn flip-flops into art and functional products and in turn raise visual awareness of the problem at hand. By creating these sculptures, we support men, women, youth (18 to 35), fisherman and other entrepreneurs that are all part of our eco-system.
PlantGang: PlantGang is a decentralised community of citizen scientists dedicated to protecting and immortalising nature through 3D scanned scientific NFT specimen collections. We’re using cutting edge 3D modelling technologies to build the first Virtual Herbarium, a scientifically accurate collection of immersive 3D models of real-world scanned plant and fungi specimens, led by a decentralised community of researchers and citizen scientists.
R3WILD: An accessible way for anyone to own and protect a piece of Africa’s wilderness. R3WILD is creating the first global community-owned wildlife reserve, enabling anyone, anywhere to become a custodian of wilderness areas and assets. We are a passionate team of conservationists with a focus on restoring and rewilding degraded land, connecting it to existing wildlife ecosystems to preserve and expand the habitats of endangered species, reduce CO2 and uplift impoverished local communities through eco-tourism.
Pollen Buzz Initiative: Pollen Buzz Initiative is a project that envisions a world where beekeeping education fosters environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and sustainable livelihoods. Operating primarily in the states of Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, we aim to create a thriving regional community committed to nurturing the environment and uplifting society through beekeeping initiatives.
Ethereum Infrastructure
Ethereum Infrastructure grants are in support of, or directly advancing the Ethereum ecosystem.
NiceNode: Are you ready to run a node but feeling held back? The current options to run a node require technical skills to open a terminal and run commands or install a new operating system. Running a node should be as simple as downloading an app — and we’ve been working hard on NiceNode to make this happen.
Eth-wizard: An Ethereum validator installation wizard meant to guide anyone through the different steps to become a fully functional validator on the Ethereum network. It will install and configure all the software needed to become a validator. It will test your installation. It will help you avoid the common pitfalls. It will help you maintain and keep your setup updated.
